ACCOMODATIONS
Participants reside in Haffner Hall on the Bryn Mawr campus. Meals are in Wyndham, the college's alumnae house, adjacent to Haffner Hall. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served five days a week; breakfast and lunch on Saturdays; brunch and dinner on Sundays. There are no facilities for spouses, families, guests or pets. You will have a single room in Haffner Hall on the Bryn Mawr campus. Your room assignment will be listed underneath your name on the preliminary participant list and posted online.  Since you are familiar with academic institutions, you probably know something about college residence halls – by no stretch of the imagination do they offer hotel amenities. Haffner is comprised of three separate language buildings, connected by a courtyard; German and Spanish have two floors and French has three floors. As is true of all Bryn Mawr College residence halls, Haffner has no private bathrooms. It does have central air/conditioning to make your stay a bit more comfortable. Linens, towels, a pillow and blanket will be supplied. Bed linens will be changed once a week and fresh towels will be supplied every day. Each room is furnished with a bed, bureau, desk, chair and lamp. Previous participants have suggested that you may want to bring your own personal touches such as a mattress pad for a twin sized bed, light summer bedspread, an alarm clock or radio, a reading pillow, pictures or an extra reading lamp. The campus bookshop is open Monday-Friday and we are within an easy walk of the town of Bryn Mawr. Laundry facilities, free at Bryn Mawr, are available at Haffner. They are located in the basement underneath the dining hall side of the entrance building.

DRESS

In general, dress is very informal (shorts, jeans, t-shirts, etc) and we encourage you to be as comfortable as you can. The opening and closing events are a bit more dressy. We will also be spending a day at the offices of the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington DC, so you should bring “office casual” for that field trip. Since classes will be held in buildings across the street from Haffner, an umbrella or raincoat will come in handy.  Philadelphia weather is typically hot and humid so bring clothes for comfort, including a sweater since all the indoor locations are air/conditioned.

MAIL

Each participant, including non-residents, is assigned a mailbox that will be at the base of the stairs in Haffner German. In addition to U.S. mail, we distribute hand-outs and other information; do please make a point to check it daily. Personal mail should be addressed to you at the Summer Institute, Bryn Mawr College, 101 N. Merion Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. It will be delivered daily to your mailbox. NOTE: Please do NOT include your room number on any mail; we have had too many instances where someone’s mail was delivered to that language department on campus and took days to track down. If you wish to send anything in advance, please mail it to yourself at the above address.

NON-RESIDENT PARTICIPANTS

Your fee includes lunches, Monday through Saturday, and dinner when there is an evening program. Please remember that you have a mailbox as well and it is important to check it daily.

TELEPHONE SERVICE

The College is in the process of eliminating most phone lines from the individual dorm rooms as most undergraduates possess a cell phone. Messages can always be left with the Summer Institute office during business hours (8:30am to 5:30pm), Monday through Friday, at 610/526-7325.

COMPUTER ACCESS

Participants will have access to the equipment in Canaday, our main library that is open Monday through Friday 8:00am to 10:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday 2:00pm to10:00pm. The help desk for computing concerns as well as for library assistance is located on the first floor of Canaday. An internet connection is available in your room in Haffner. You will need to bring your own Ethernet cord. Wireless service is available in the classroom buildings and the library; limited wireless is available in the courtyard of the residence hall.  Like everywhere else, please turn off your cell phone, PDA or pager when in sessions.

SMOKING

The College’s smoking policy affects all the buildings we use for the Institute. Because all of our residence halls have become non-smoking, we request that you refrain from smoking in your room. The dining room of Wyndham is non-smoking; smoking is allowed at the outside tables on the patio of Wyndham and in the courtyard of Haffner. Smoking is allowed in all outdoor locations.
